Education
Richard received a BA (Economics) and a Law Degree from University of British Columbia, and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1981. Prior to graduation he studied at Cambridge University in England and Brandeis University in Watham, Mass. USA.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Over the years, Richard has been extremely active within the legal profession, accepting leadership roles and assisting with projects that help to guide the profession. In that capacity, he currently sits on the Editorial Review Board for new e-book on Practice Management being developed by the Law Society of BC. His past leadership experience also includes a number of roles with the Canadian Bar Association including the following:
- Chair of the Vancouver Wills and Estates Section Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association (“CBA”);
- Chair, National Real Property Section of the CBA;
- Vice Chair, and Secretary Treasurer of the National Real Property Subsection of the CBA;
- Past Editor, National Real Property Newsletter of the CBA;
- Member of the Executive and Liaison to the Communications Committee of the National Sections council of the CBA;
- Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary Treasurer of the Vancouver Real Property Subsection of the CBA.
Community Activities
Throughout his career, Richard has demonstrated a strong commitment to community through his involvement and leadership in the following:
- National Director, Magen David Adom (Israel’s Red Cross) and past President and founder of the BC Branch;
- Environment Committee Chair, Surrey Chamber Of Commerce (now known as the Surrey Board of Trade);
- Member of the Board of Directors and Member of the Executive, Surrey Chamber Of Commerce;
- Past Secretary and Director of the Fraser Valley Estate Planning Council;
- Past Chair, Speakers’ Committee and member of the Board of Directors of the Abbotsford Estate Planning Council;
- Youth Committee Chairman and Member of the Board of Directors, Schara Tzedeck Synagogue;
- Member of the Board of Directors and Legal Counsel, Maimonides School Society, the governing arm of the Vancouver Jewish High School (now known as King David High School).
Passions
In addition to his family, Richard’s passions include photography, gardening, the Bible, the study of history (including economic history), civil engineering, long distance running and cycling.
